After more than a year of just wanting kibble, Kerrigan has decided she likes canned food again. This is a good thing, because Dr. H wants her to have it more often.

C and I are theorizing that they may have changed the formulation of the liquid calcitriol; we were mixing that into her food when she decided she didn't like the "gooshyfood." Now that she gets her calcitriol as a treat, she apparently enjoys the "unadulterated" canned food.

We've been supplementing her dry with a heaping teaspoon of canned, and she's been happily chowing down on it. Yesterday, she didn't want to eat much dry, but devoured the canned in record time.
It's thundering here right now, and poor Kerrigan is slinking around the house, belly low to the floor. She's always hated thunderstorms, poor little girl.
(See here for Part 1)

Grazer that she is, Kerrigan normally takes a while to eat her dinner.

For the past few weeks, [livejournal.com profile] lostsatyr and I have been watching Kamen Rider OOO in the evenings. Normally, I pick up K's dinner right before we start watching, give her her calcitriol, and settle down to watch that night's episode. Sometimes Kerrigan will settle into either my or [livejournal.com profile] lostsatyr's lap and snooze during that time, though she's likely to abandon the lap if its owner laughs too hard during a funny moment (of which there are a number in KR OOO).

Late last week, [livejournal.com profile] lostsatyr started the DVD, and when Kerrigan heard the opening theme, she jumped down off the couch where she'd been napping, trotted over to her dish, and started munching again. [livejournal.com profile] lostsatyr said to me later (I'd been in the kitchen when it happened) that perhaps K was thinking, "That music! That's the signal to eat, 'cause it means Mommy will take the bowl away soon!" :)
A few months ago, I started brushing Kerrigan after breakfast (hers and mine) every day, in order to keep down the incidence of hairballs (which can lead to her not eating until she gets rid of them).

She seems to really enjoy being brushed; this morning, when I asked her, "Should we brush you?" and got her brush, she hopped off the back of the loveseat and came right over to be groomed. She'll also roll on the floor, and start to rub against me and wash me with her tongue while I brush her; I guess she thinks she's grooming me, too. :)
...to Kerrigan!

Mommy loves you very much, my pretty kitty girl!
Kerrigan seems to be taking over the "Number One Kitty" spot since she's been living downstairs. The past few days, she's gone up on the couch with us - something she never did while Ari was around. This afternoon, she even napped next to me while I watched some TV, just the way Ari used to.

She also seems to have a better appetite than when she was upstairs; it used to take forever (and some coaxing) to get her to finish her food, but now she's eating much better. We've been experimenting with lower phosphorus cat foods (as she has some mild renal issues) and she likes Fancy Feast the best (at least so far). Some of the Science Diet flavors are tolerable (though she doesn't like them as much), but she seems to not like the Wellness canned food at all (Yuriko, on the other hand, has yet to meet a cat food she doesn't like).

Yuriko seems to be OK with being upstairs; C and I visit her regularly to play with her so she doesn't feel left out. She loves chasing these little foam rubber balls we got her up and down the hall; we're going to have to get her some new ones, as we keep losing them (though I do sometimes rediscover them later). It's interesting that she's nearly two and still likes balls - both Ari and Kerrigan lost interest in them shortly after their first birthdays, but Yuriko is still, like, "A ball! Yay!" *runs after the ball and bats it around*

Kerrigan seems to be getting a kick out of the Cat Dancer these days; she chases it back and forth in the open space between the couch and the coffee table until she's tired out. This afternoon, she played with it until she just sacked out right there! :)

I love my girls!
Today is the day that Kerrigan and Yuriko get to meet face-to-face for the first time. I hope things go well.

*crosses fingers*
Dr. H gave us the go-ahead to allow Yuriko to explore the house (though she and Kerrigan still aren't allowed to meet just yet), and she seems to be enjoying these opportunities.

So far, she seems to like the window on the upstairs landing a lot, though that's not too surprising - it's one of Kerrigan's favorite hangouts, and was one of Ari's too. :)

She's sitting in the living room watching me as I type this, and I just noticed that she has the cutest pattern of stripes on her chest - it looks like the bottom part of the "neckerchief" part of the collar of a Japanese girl's school uniform (a'la Yukiko Amagi's in Persona 4) to me.

We had some playtime before she went back into her "sanctuary room" (the downstairs bathroom), and I discovered that she loves chasing the crinkle ball around the house. I throw it, and then she chases it; when she catches it, she bats it around on her own and catches it again; it's very entertaining to watch.

There still haven't been any really bad reactions to the "'scent and sound, but no sight' introductions" (well, Kerrigan did hiss at Yuriko's door briefly one time the night before last, but that was it), which is good. Both Yuriko and Kerrigan seem unconcerned with the "scented socks" - they sniff them and then are pretty much like, "OK, whatever." So I'm hoping the actual face to face intros will go smoothly as well. C and I picked up some cat treats for the introductions, because Dr. H (and the books I've read) said that giving kitties treats when we introduce them will help them form pleasant associations with one another.

If they become friends, it'd be wonderful, but I'll be satisfied with peaceful co-existence.
...to Miss Kerrigan!

She turned 10 on July 11.

Vacation!

Apr. 1st, 2009 02:29 pm
[livejournal.com profile] lostsatyr and I are off to I-Con 28 on Long Island tomorrow morning!

I think the kitties will enjoy their "stay-cation," too - they'll have the house all to themselves for four days! Well, except when my parents come to feed them and do cat box duty.... :)
It was a pretty good Xmas, despite me *still* trying to get rid of the Cold of DoomTM.

I could have done without the running around yesterday, though - by the time we got home, I couldn't stop coughing.

We had lunch at my parents', then we opened gifts and went over to my sister-in-law's for dinner. My nephew B couldn't wait to open his presents; I think he was done before any of the adults even got started. :) [livejournal.com profile] lostsatyr and I got him a copy of Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows; his mom said that his dad'll have to read it with him, as she gets impatient with Rowling's verbosity ("She needs an editor! I want to grab a red pen and start crossing out whole paragraphs!"). *chuckles* Can't really say I blame her. :)

We finally got back home at close to 10, where we opened our gifts from each other and [livejournal.com profile] bonusparts & S. Then it was bed, as we were both wiped out.

This morning, Ari and Kerrigan got their presents - some catnip and valerian herbal kitty toys that I picked up at the Pennsylvania Renn Faire in October. They were very well-received - both of them were happily playing with them for quite some time (pictures to be uploaded).

( This year's loot )
So, we got back from our trip yesterday evening.

Our second day at the Faire was a lot of fun, especially since we got there early enough to see the very beginning of the story. We got to follow the storyline all day, which was very cool. Even though I knew what was going to happen, it was still fun. Poor Katherine Howard, though - I felt bad for her at the end.

I picked up a new Alison Weir book, Lady Elizabeth, about the early days of Elizabeth I. I've enjoyed all of Weir's previous books that I've read, so I anticipate that this one will be similarly enjoyable.

We got back to S & [livejournal.com profile] bonusparts's at around 9:30. I guess I was tired and not thinking too clearly, because I pretty much went straight to bed after giving [livejournal.com profile] bonusparts the pitcher [livejournal.com profile] lostsatyr and I had gotten for her and S. I also left the catnip that I had picked up for our fuzzballs and [livejournal.com profile] bonusparts's kitties in my "Faire basket." (more on that later)

The next morning, [livejournal.com profile] lostsatyr and I chatted with S and [livejournal.com profile] bonusparts before S left for work. [livejournal.com profile] bonusparts stayed a while longer to see us off, and as we were packing up the car, we discovered that [livejournal.com profile] bonusparts's kitties had found the present that "auntie [livejournal.com profile] ravensdaughter" had brought them - there was catnip all over the rug and [livejournal.com profile] lostsatyr's and my luggage. We managed to save some of it, at least. Oh, well, at least it was *very* well-received. :)

[livejournal.com profile] lostsatyr and I made our way back to Buffalo, with a stop in Henrietta for dinner and some shopping at our favorite anime store, Hammergirl Anime. After some scrumptious Indian food at Taste of India in Henrietta (one of the *BEST* Indian places around, IMnsHO), we headed home to Buffalo.

After we unloaded the car, I noticed Ari rubbing against one side of my (now-empty) duffel bag. Apparently, he was after the catnip I had packed in the side compartment. I retrieved the plastic bag of catnip and placed it out of harm's way, but then I noticed that he had his head buried in the main compartment - apparently, he could still smell the catnip ("I know it's there! I can get to it!") or he was getting high off the fumes...I'm not sure which. Anyway, he got revved up, and poor Kerrigan got the brunt of his reduced inhibitions - we had to separate them until he calmed down. [livejournal.com profile] lostsatyr and I stayed up a while after that, and then went to bed.

And I need to get started on the mountain of laundry from the trip....
Happy birthday to my little fluffy girl!

Mommy loves you bunches and bunches!
